Why do the wigs shed?

Prior to the tips to care, let us learn the reasons to cause hair shedding. There can be several reasons why wigs shed. Here are some common factors that contribute to wig shedding:

  1. Poor quality construction

Wigs that are made with low-quality materials or have inferior craftsmanship are more likely to shed. The wig fibers may be loosely attached to the cap, leading to easy breakage and shedding. Human hair will be better than synthetic hair in the wig quality and maintenance.

  • Age and wear

Over time, wigs naturally experience wear and tear, which can result in shedding. The constant friction from brushing, styling, and wearing the wig can cause the hair to loosen and fall out.

Improper Handling: Rough handling of the wig, such as excessive brushing, pulling, or combing from the roots to the ends, can cause stress on the wig fibers. This stress weakens the attachment and leads to shedding.

  • Harsh products

Using harsh shampoos, conditioners, or styling products on your wig can strip the hair fibers of their natural oils and moisture. This can make the hair brittle and prone to shedding.

Heat Styling: Excessive heat from styling tools like curling irons, straighteners, or hot rollers can damage the wig fibers, making them more likely to shed.

  • Environmental factors

Exposure to sunlight, humidity, and extreme temperatures can impact the integrity of the wig fibers. Over time, this can lead to shedding.

  • Incorrect storage

Improper storage of wigs, such as leaving them in direct sunlight or storing them in a cramped space, can cause the hair fibers to weaken and shed. It’s important to note that shedding can occur to some extent with all wigs, even high-quality ones. However, by properly caring for and maintaining your wig, you can minimize shedding and prolong its lifespan.

How to care for your wigs from hair shedding?

  1. Choose a High-Quality Wig

The first step in preventing wig shedding is to invest in a high-quality wig. Cheap wigs are more likely to shed because they are made with lower-quality materials and craftsmanship. Look for wigs that are made with human hair or high-quality synthetic fibers. These wigs are more durable and less prone to shedding.

  • Properly Store Your Wig

Proper storage is essential to maintain the integrity of your wig and prevent shedding. It is a nice short-term storage to store on a wig stand or in a wig box for a natural look. Avoid tossing it in a drawer or leaving it in direct sunlight, as this can cause the wig fibers to become weak and prone to shedding. For long-term storage, you can use a wig box or silk wig bag.

  • Avoid Excessive Brushing

While it’s important to brush your wig regularly to keep it looking neat and tangle-free, excessive brushing can lead to shedding. Use a wide-toothed comb or a wig brush specifically designed for wigs to gently detangle your wig. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots to minimize pulling on the wig fibers.

  • Use Proper Washing Techniques

Proper washing techniques can also help reduce shedding. Avoid harsh shampoos or conditioners that can strip the wig fibers and weaken them. Instead, opt for gentle, wig-specific products. When washing your wig, avoid rubbing or twisting the hair as this can cause shedding. After washing, you can gently squeeze the hair, use a towel to absorb most water, and let the wig air dry on a wig stand.

  • Secure the Wig Properly

Ensuring that your wig is secure on your head can also help minimize shedding. Use wig clips, bobby pins, or adhesive tapes to secure the wig in place. This will prevent excessive pulling or tugging on the wig, which can lead to shedding.

  • Avoid Heat Styling

Excessive heat styling can damage the wig fibers and cause shedding. Avoid curling irons, straighteners, or hot rollers on your wig, as the heat can weaken the fibers. If you want to style your wig, opt for heat-free methods such as foam rollers or wet sets.

  • Trim Split Ends

Just like your natural hair, the wigs can develop split ends over time as well. Trimming the split ends can prevent further damage and shedding. Use sharp scissors and carefully trim the split ends, careful not to cut too much of the wig fibers.

Final thoughts

Shedding can be frustrating when it comes to wigs, but by following these tips, you can minimize shedding and extend the life of your wig. Remember to invest in a high-quality wig, store it properly, avoid excessive brushing and heat styling, and use gentle washing techniques. With proper care, your wig will stay looking beautiful and shed-free for longer.
